Navigating Difficult Conversations

Develop your toolkit for work's inevitable difficult conversations

This is a core set of skills, essential for managers and professionals of all levels. There will inevitably be differences of interests, needs, values, priorities, personalities; there will also be conflicts over the allocation of resources and what direction to take. Knowing how to approach conversations over these differences will open up many doors for you. This training gives you the tools for what to do before, during and after the conversation.

The course helps you develop your emotional intelligence so that you become aware of your behaviours and triggers. This awareness is the first step to managing your own emotional response. It also gives you the foundation for anticipating and reading the responses of others. By doing so, you can adapt your communication to help others manage their own responses.

The course draws also on tools developed in non-violent communication, in language models, framing, awareness of belief, state, body language, power, and strategic thinking. It also draws on the knowledge of some of the best experts from hostage negotiation. After all, if it works there, it will probably help at the office, or at home!

I train & coach conflict management at the EU and in the corporate world to senior, middle and first-time managers.

I’ve been training variations of conflict management for over a decade, but I’ve been refining my strategies in it for as long as I can remember. And it seems that the need for dialogue is now more acute than at any time I’ve experienced – the crises we see on the news have a habit of seeping into daily life.

What I train is what I try to practice whenever the conversation becomes high stakes. It’s founded on the coaching skills of listening, the self-awareness and management skills I’ve learnt from yoga and meditation, the language skills I learnt from NLP, and from deep reading. This is a deep skillset, which means there will always be the next level to develop to.
